NY State of Mind

Last weekend we traveled to NYC to play against Long Island University - Brooklyn Campus and Saint Francis College of New York. We went 1-1. Our team has some NY flavor. Tara Lonergan is from Rockville Center, NY and Kelly Guerriero is from Floral Park, NY. Junior Captain Tara Lonergan talks about the trip.
Some of the players braved the cold weather to catch the Manhattan Skyline after dinner Sunday night.
Hi, I'm Tara Lonergan a junior here on the Women's Basketball Team and I am from Rockville Centre, NY. Staying in Brooklyn last weekend was awesome. I just love being in New York City even though it wasn't my hometown. Everyone says I have a strong New York accent.I love being around people who sound like me or have even stronger accents. My favorite part of the tip was being able to eat pizza. Pizza is hands down made best in New York. I always look forward to playing in New York, because I am able to see my family and friends when they come to the games.
At LIU, my whole family came except my sister Megan who plays on the Queens College basketball team. She had a game the same day. At St. Francis my dad, sister, friend and her father came to the game to see us get a W. Playing in front of my family is exciting, because they get to watch me do what I love and its always fun seeing familiar faces in the crowd.
Our first game of the weekend at LIU started out great. We were hitting a majority of our shots and found a strong rhythm with each other. However, LIU made a comeback and took the lead and we weren't able to come back. Our game at St. Francis started the opposite of LIU, we weren't making shots and we were looking for a spark. Being down 9 at halftime we came out strong, tied up the game, and eventually took the lead.
This weekend we are traveling up to Conneticut to play Sacred Heart and Quinnipiac and are hoping to get two W's. Being 4-4 in conference and tied for 4th with four other teams, every game is important to get into playoffs. The rest of our schedule will be tough, but there's no doubt in my mind we can keep winning and make it into playoffs. GO MOUNT!

Alumni Update - Agnus Berenato

Being apart of the Mount Women's Basketball Family doesn't end when you play your last game or walk across the stage to graduate. A part of our Behind The ARCC posts will be Alumni Updates from former players. Our first update comes from Agnus Berenato '80, who is currently the Head Women's Basketball Coach at the University of Pittsburgh. The Mount WBB team lost to Pitt December 29 this season 58-45. She wrote a post about her experience playing for the Mount, how it feels to play against us, and what it means to be apart of the Mount family. Enjoy!!

Playing for the Mount was an awesome experience. Of course, like any team, we had great wins and tough losses but the special thing was the competition and team. Fr Delaney was my first Coach, and I still consider his daily lessons my game plan for life. Fred "Mad Dog" Carter was my other coach at the Mount and I cheer him and jeer him depending on the day! Coach Carter is the main reason I am coaching today so when we have a big victory, I cheer him and when I suffer a devastating loss, I jeer him.
The team was what made it work for me. The likes of Margaret Diaz, Sue Janowiak, Lynne Phelan, Maureen Cashen and our self appointed manager/operations man AJ DeLaurentis made the Mount team special. The team Masses. J Term. Van rides and stops at that damn Pizza Hut off Hagerstown Rd. Team meals. Scrimmage vs the twisted Coyle twins of Rutgers. These were the memories I will never forget. The game is the game but life is what the game is all about. I learned many things at the Mount being on the basketball team, but the best was just having a uniform and a seat on the bus.

When I coach against the Mount it is very difficult for me. My emotions run high and I wonder if the student athletes know how lucky they are to attend such a great University. Honestly, I get goose bumps every time I speak of the Mount but when it comes to competition, winning is the name of the game!!!

I was and am fortunate to have the Mount woven into the fabric of who I am. I will always be thankful for the Spirit of the Mount and it makes me smile to think of the wonderful Catholic Community I belong to.
